Barcelona forward from Argentina, Lionel Messi has been named the 2019 World’s highest paid athlete.
The ranking released by Forbes showed that Messi made a whopping $92 million from salary and winnings while $35 million came from endorsements. In total, he amassed $127 million to earn the spot.
By this latest ranking, he has unseated retired boxer, Floyd Mayweather who held the position four times in seven years.
Cristiano Ronaldo placed second with an earning of about $109 million between his salary and endorsements.
Football earned a good spot with three great athletes making the top three list – Messi, Ronaldo, and Neymar. However, basketball players dominated the top 100 overall with 35 athletes on the list earning a total of $1.29 billion, with 72% of that income coming from salaries rather than endorsement deals, according to Forbes.
The list consists of 35 basketball players among the top 100, while 19 players from football, 15 from Baseball and 12 from soccer also made the list.
Americans dominated the list with 25 different countries represented so far this year. The U.K. has five athletes, France and Spain have three each, while Brazil, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Serbia and Venezuela all have two respectively.
